It seems as though Christmas is always fast approaching, one minute its here, you blink, its gone, you blink again and it’s coming at you in full force much like that dreaded Monday morning after a big weekend. Every year I tell myself, “next year I’m going to start preparing months earlier than this one”, but alas, the next year rolls around and I’m just as disorganised as the last, if not more.
I always found it strange that it was in our human nature to leave many things in life to the last minute, especially said festive preparations. The crazy crowds of people near any type of shop, the parking in random spots that would usually not be permitted like traffic islands and trolley bays because it’s impossible to fit your car anywhere else in the vicinity of a shopping centre, the fight for a number when trying to order your Christmas ham from the deli, all things that at any other time of the year would make anyone give up in frustration, find an alternative, and possibly curl up into a foetal position. Yes, a time that is meant to be happy and about family and celebration, can often make me and I’m sure many others feel less like Mrs Claus, and more like the Grinch.
So, this year I decided to channel my inner Mrs Claus and disregard my inner Grinch, if you’re on the same page, and are hoping to get the prep started sooner rather than later, here is a list of unconventional gift ideas.
The Day Trip
Why not save some dough as well as all that time you seem to always run out of, and organise a fun day trip for all the immediate fam. We’re lucky enough to live in a country so full of natural beauty, that no matter where you’re located, there’s always going to be some beautiful destinations within the reach of an hour or two, so get the fam bam together and discover the natural treasures of our land.
P.S. Don’t forget to pack the essentials, ie; tap into that Christmas chocolate.
You can never really go wrong with a picnic, whether it be with the family, your favourite little cousins & nieces/nephews or even your significant other, nothing beats your favourite outdoor activities in the park, accompanied by some yummy treats and nostalgic beats.
If you’re lucky enough to live not too far from a great gallery, then this is the perfect unconventional answer to the difficult gift question. Australia has many world class galleries from MONA to the NGV, there’s something for all, from art lovers, to the pop culture buffs.
The Thrill Seeker
For the thrill seekers in your life, try adventure experiences, maybe hire a charter fishing boat for dad, take your younger cousin kayaking, or even take mother dearest on a hot air balloon ride, you really can’t put money on out of this world experiences.
The Young at Heart
Who doesn’t love a treasure hunt? Whether they’re pushing 60 or approaching 6, a treasure hunt is always a sure pleaser. Everyone loves a good hunt, whether it be trying to find where your mums hidden the secret stash of chocolate for when guests come over, or going so far back and accidentally liking a photo from 3 years ago whilst insta stalking, it may even be rummaging threw boxes of old things at a flea market, the hunt is always always thrilling, especially when chocolate marks the spot.
What They Really Want
Chocolate. If all else fails, this is your safety net, you can never go wrong with chocolate, you’ll never have to worry about them already having it, because chances are, they’ve already finished every piece in their possession. There is plenty of love for all, from chocolate bouquets for the youngsters, to the beer loving bros and the traditionalists. And as for that one friend we all have, yes, the one that likes to pretend they’re not “about that life” and tries to make us feel guilty for having a deep connection with the cocoa, there’s always a healthy option. The only work you’ll have to do will be tapping that keyboard.
