I was having a shocking day a number of weeks ago. It seemed that nothing could possibly go right. I was sick, snowed under with work and felt generally run down. To my surprise, my partner appeared at my door with chocolates and a beautiful bouquet. I was touched and elated.
To my dismay, I’ve always felt saddened that there are no obvious, spontaneous gifts to give the man in your life. Of course there are always things that he likes and wants, but without spending hundreds on these ideas, I have always felt I am not left with many options.
So, if you’re anything like me, want to be spontaneous and wonder what on earth to do – here are some of my favourite gift ideas for him:
- A Romantic Night In
I know, this one has probably been done to death. But sometimes, all your boyfriend, husband or partner wants is to know that he is valued and loved. What better way to show him that than with a bottle of wine, a home-cooked meal and some amazing conversation? Set a table, light some candles and surprise him as he walks in the door. These simple gestures remind him that you appreciate him and your relationship.
Okay, bear with me. I know this one seems strange. I once purchased a whole heap of different beers for my older brother. He is a mad beer fan – and believe me, when he saw them all neatly arranged in a little basket, he looked thrilled. Pick an alcohol your partner likes – scotch, wine, beer, etc – and buy a few he hasn’t tried yet. This can be a little pricey depending on his taste, but there are certainly ways around that. Buying smaller bottles or limiting the amount you purchase can cut cost without cutting the idea.
Often, being creative with the brands you select allows him to try something new and really appreciate the effort you have put into finding him things he could love.
Men love chocolate too! A box of chocolates or a chocolate bouquet for men is a great idea. Find a company that will deliver if you want to go for ULTIMATE spontaneity. Bouquets are a creative way to get in a number of your man’s favourite items: beer, alcohol, chocolate!
- Treasure Hunt
I have always loved creating treasure hunts. If you live together, or find yourself in your boyfriend’s apartment, set up a mini treasure hunt. These are loads of fun and will keep him guessing!
Start by writing out instructions – you can do this with rhymes, direct instructions or inside jokes you may have. A good idea is to put the first clue in a very obvious spot where he will not miss it. If you’re worried he won’t find it, put it on his pillow.
Dot the clues around his house. You can write a nice sentiment about your relationship with the next clue – the creativity is really up to you!
I like to put little love heart chocolates on each of my clues so that he has something to nibble while he looks for the next!
- Personalized items
My father loves handkerchiefs. For Christmas one year, I purchased a bunch of them and had his name monogrammed into them. I have never seen someone look so excited to see their own name. To my mother’s happiness, he ended up tossing all his old, ratty hankies away to make room for his new and improved version.
Personalizing something may not spring to mind as the easiest spontaneous gift. But once you wrap your head around it, it actually becomes something super thoughtful for someone you care about.
You can personalize a number of items with a brand, phrase or a name. If you were to purchase a chocolate bouquet, we can personalise them for you! Or even try some of our hilarious cookie bouquets or add-ons which are a super tasty way to say “I love you”! In other instances, clothing and other gadgets can be engraved or monogrammed. These items become a wonderful memento for your partner.
